site qualities

characteristics of the site

POST-INDUSTRIAL DESERT

NDSM-Wharf is a post-industrial desert, that creates a feeling of detachment. Though the site is inhabited by some pioneers and a few large firms in their corporate fortresses, most of the site remains a barren place with great views and little protection against the elements.

INSIDE VS OUTSIDE

While at first sight, not a lot happens at the NDSM-wharf when you are there on an ordinary week day. However, when you go inside the Kunst-stad, MTV HQ or maybe Red Bull you will find a lot of stuff going on at this site.

OPEN SPACE = POSSIBILITIES

The absence of activities and the vast open space after the closure of the wharf has generated an environment where there are many possibilities without a lot of limitations. This has drawn in many artists and creative people as well as the festivals that happen at the place during the summer months.

VOYAGE

For the people from the centre of Amsterdam and beyond, getting to NDSM-wharf is a true voyage. However the wharf is located at only 10 minutes from the Central Station of Amsterdam, the link between both places is operated by a ferry which only travels once every 30 minutes and even less at night. This feeling of detachement, or bad connectivity as some would name it, is a strong feeling connected to the place.
