Extraction of problems and opportunities

Introduction. From my description of the NDSM site some problems and opportunities become visible.

Closed ecosystems

If you take a look at NDSM today from the outside, not much seems to be going on. Appearances are deceptive, inside the warehouses there is a lot of activity. The great walls of the hangars are not inviting to take a look. This might be one of the reasons why all of the users of the NDSM have so little of interaction.

-As illustrated before the companies and institutions of the NDSM stay in their own environments and have almost no interaction. This causes the people to feel unattached and not at home.

-Because each institution doesn’t look behind its wall a lot of opportunities are missed. If for example public and artists are brought together in certain place by means of exhibition space. It creates advantages for both parties. Same could be said about interaction between skatepark and redbull. MTV and redbull. Artists and inhabitants.

+On a professional a good working ecosystem with a lot of interaction between different user groups would greatly improve productivity, knowledge and image of the site.

+If people would more interact and get to know more of their neighbors they will feel more at home and attached. This is an important aspect because right now the site is a hot and attractive but when this changes those who are only there for that reason and who do not feel attached will soon lose interest and go away.

+Feeling more attached and responsible for your neighborhood improves the community as a whole. Less violence, dirt, vandalism, etc. More friendly people, happy faces, more happiness. :)

In the middle of a transition

As made clear in the description of the NDSM ecosystem a very important aspact of this ecosystem is that it is very dynamic. Right now the NDSM is in the middle of a transition state from the past to the future. To put it more clear, the space that we will be building on can only be rented to a maximum of 10 years .-Investmentplan

The reason that the government has chosen this temporal establishment is because of the economical crisis. The 10 years are needed to wait for the economy to be in a state that it is profitable to invest in the large scale housing projects. The temporal buildings will serve the NDSM by strengthening its image of a free and creative hotspot.

+ The strengthening of this image will attract investors and developers.

+ Of course this is also beneficial for those(mainly artists) who can make use of the temporal space. Not only by just using it but even by being supported by the government.

- After 10 years chances are quite big that the temporal buildings have to make place for large scale housing and offices projects.

Most important parameters and qualities

Parameters

Qualities

Why should we go into the water?

Advantages above land:

+Buttom-up The project will start at just a small scale but as more and more people will use it the diversity of services will grow and it will become even more attractive for more people. There is no end to the growth. Inside the Netherlands almost 20% of the surface consists of water.

+Move-able. Users can re-locate their studio's at all times. If for example it's very busy at the NDSM and the artist needs some silence and space he might sail to open water. Or, in another example, if an artist wants to have his studio close (or even attached) to his exhibition space in the center of the city he might just sail his city to the city center.

+Re-move-able. After the 10 years have gone by chances are that the general attitude towards artists has changed and that they have to move away from the NDSM. It's also conceivable that the artists themselves want to move away from the NDSM because they wont have the freedom anymore with all the housing projects around. Because the artists have their ateliers on the water they can easily go to any place they like. They can move their 'facility islands' with them and start their community in another place or scatter all around and start different communities by themselves.

+No demolishion. After it's use the floating studios don't need to be demolished. If position doesn't satisfy anymore it can me re-moved. If the type of use is does not satisfy anymore it can be taken over by another user who can just sail to the 'service island' of his taste.

+Adaptability. When the artists are gone their place on the water can be taken by other users who will need other 'service islands'.

+Connectivity. Amsterdam, the Venice of the North, has the best connection to the water you can think of. With the development around the IJ shores it's likely that traffic on the water will increase. With the use of a waterTAXI it would be very fast to move to any floating studio or service island. It might be even the fastest way to get from one side of the city to the other.

Validators

There are 4 validators, who I know personally, who could be relevant to my project so far:

Buurman Stephan - artist

Lex Brands - former director of Kinetic Noord

Kees Diepeveen – alderman/wethouder_RuimtelijkeOrdening_Milieu_Volkshuisvesting&Monumentenzorg_Sport_LandelijkNoord

Coby van Berkum - alderman/wethouder_Jeugdzaken & Onderwijs_Zorg & Armoede (betreft schuldhulpverlening, woonservicewijken, maatschappelijke opvang, diversiteit)_WMO

I've not yet tagged them and not yet spoken with them about the project.

Hypothesesapart from the fysical validators it is important to have a way to validate the disign of the future. With the help of the fysical validators the goal is to write a scenario of what the 'Waterland' will look like in 10-20-30 or even more years.

General concept of the scenario of use at a big scale:
