Conceptual Design that answers on the problems and opportunities

Comprehensive Descirption of the aim of the design

Closed ecosystems - OPEN THE GATES!

For everyone involved at the NDSM it is important to open up and talk to its neighbours and to know what they're doing. The goal is not to impose a social change but to create possibilities, to create chances to social change.

Project 14 Connection types1-01.jpg

-In my design proposal the chance of interaction is created at two different levels.

1. By allowing anyone to 'rent' or 'own' a 'floating studio*' anyone can connect to anyone by linking their separate platforms together. The bigger the team, the bigger the platform will be. Contacts might already exist so the users can meet at a certain time and space. But there is also a meeting point for people who want to work together with others but don't know who can be their partners.

Examples: -An architect wants to work together with an actor to design a theater. -MTV want to organize an event and is searching for artists that what to design the stages and public spaces.

Project 14 Connection types2-01.jpg

2. Another way in which the interaction is stimulated is by sharing facilities. By having multiple 'facility islands*' owners or renters can sail their studio to one of them and use whatever they need.

Examples: -An architect can sail to a service island with laser cutter. -An artist wants to make an art piece out of metal, and clay and can make use of two service islands. A metal-workshop(with welding equipments etc.) and a clay- workshop(with turning tables, oven etc.).

Possible services: Metal-workshop, clay-workshop, music-studio, 3D-Printer, painting-workshop, bluescreen-studio, nautic-shop, exibition-platform, concert-stage, etc..

In the middle of a transition - DESIGN FOR THE FUTURE!

No-one on earth can tell the future... yet. Still an architect always needs to design a building to fit into the future. The near future is always easier to predict so most architects used to design for a continuation of today. At the NDSM things are changing in such a speed that it wouldn't make sense at all to design with today's conditions in mind. The design should in some way react on the future. Although the future cannot be predicted there are some things that we can already presume;

1.The site will only be space at the NDSM for a maximum of 10 years.

2.As groups of users have changed in the past its likely that they will change in the future as well. Because demolition at the end of life is not an ideal option (buildings are memories too). The concept is to make it possible to re-move the buildings to another location.

(Sketch of the future)

THE FUTURE STARTS NOW!!!

Of course the design needs to fit into today's conditions as well. This is where the future is starting. In this time of economic crisis and also because the concept of floating studios is new it needs to be designed with a bottom-up approach. Therefore the first phase will be designed for the current, creative, users of the NDSM. Mainly artists, employers of MTV,Redbull, HEMA etc, and people from outside the NDSM will be able to use the floating studios.

ONE STEP BEYOND

In case the idea of floating studios proves to be a success it will be adopted by many more fields than just the artists'. It will spread over from the NDSM to its neighboring places and into the city-center and in the end it will spread over IJburg, the IJsselmeer and it will be picked up in all parts of the world. There will be floating cities on the oceans that work with the principle designed by Sam van Til. Bottom-Up!

Most important parameters and qualities

Parameters

Important parameters are the imports and outputs to the projects that this project connects to.

There are many possible shapes that allow for the platforms to connect. All have different characters, advantages and disadvantages. I still have to find a satisfying shape.

Qualities

Why should we go into the water?

Advantages above land:

Project 14 qualitiesButtomUp-01.jpg

+Buttom-up The project will start at just a small scale but as more and more people will use it the diversity of services will grow and it will become even more attractive for more people. There is no end to the growth. Inside the Netherlands almost 20% of the surface consists of water.

Project 14 qualitiesMove-01.jpg

+Move-able. Users can re-locate their studio's at all times. If for example it's very busy at the NDSM and the artist needs some silence and space he might sail to open water. Or, in another example, if an artist wants to have his studio close (or even attached) to his exhibition space in the center of the city he might just sail his city to the city center.

Project 14 qualitiesReMove-01.jpg

+Re-move-able. After the 10 years have gone by chances are that the general attitude towards artists has changed and that they have to move away from the NDSM. It's also conceivable that the artists themselves want to move away from the NDSM because they wont have the freedom anymore with all the housing projects around. Because the artists have their ateliers on the water they can easily go to any place they like. They can move their 'facility islands' with them and start their community in another place or scatter all around and start different communities by themselves.

Project 14 qualitiesNoDemolish-01.jpg

+No demolishion. After it's use the floating studios don't need to be demolished. If position doesn't satisfy anymore it can me re-moved. If the type of use is does not satisfy anymore it can be taken over by another user who can just sail to the 'service island' of his taste.

Project 14 qualitiesAdoptibility-01.jpg

+Adaptability. When the artists are gone their place on the water can be taken by other users who will need other 'service islands'.

Project 14 qualitiesAmsterdam-01.jpg

+Connectivity. Amsterdam, the Venice of the North, has the best connection to the water you can think of. With the development around the IJ shores it's likely that traffic on the water will increase. With the use of a waterTAXI it would be very fast to move to any floating studio or service island. It might be even the fastest way to get from one side of the city to the other.

Architectural expression

Its not yet certain what exactly the floating studios, piers and islands will look like. I've got some idea's which can be found in the images below.

Validators

Fysical validators

There are 4 validators, who I know personally, who could be relevant to my project so far:

Buurman Stephan - artist

Lex Brands - former director of Kinetic Noord

Kees Diepeveen – alderman/wethouder_RuimtelijkeOrdening_Milieu_Volkshuisvesting&Monumentenzorg_Sport_LandelijkNoord

Coby van Berkum - alderman/wethouder_Jeugdzaken & Onderwijs_Zorg & Armoede (betreft schuldhulpverlening, woonservicewijken, maatschappelijke opvang, diversiteit)_WMO

I've not yet tagged them and not yet spoken with them about the project.

Hypotheses

Apart from the fysical validators it is important to have a way to validate the disign of the future. With the help of the fysical validators the goal is to write a scenario of what the 'Waterland' will look like in 10-20-30 or even more years.

General concept of the scenario of use at a big scale:
