First Project: Connecting Studio's

The Ecosystem: NEEDS & GIFTS (please take and provide!)

NEEDS

-Users, this can be any kind of users and will be able to change in the future. Concrete users I'm thinking about to start with are artists, media artists, industrial designers, architects, actors, musicians, nautic-companies, etc.

-Factory for making the 'boats'. This can be anywhere on the NDSM-site. The 'boats' might be transported over the old tram line and be lowerd down in the dock by a crane.

GIFTS

-Space for users(see above)

-Services. Depending on the demand of its users this can be any kind of services. Concrete exsamples so far might include, 3D-printer, clay-workshop, metal-workshop, musicspace, bluescreen-space, supercomputer, stage, etc. (please contact me for any demands!)

First Idea's of the place

A short introduction. The site has a relative short history in which it has been a shipsmaking factory which moved to the location in 1919. In 1937 it was the biggest shipyard in the world. In 1984 the NSM was declared bankrupt. After this time the docks have been operated by Shipdock BV who repaired ships in these docks. A lot of big warehouses have been squatted over the years. It has slowly developed in a 'breeding place' for young artists and other small scale workers. In 2001 a lot of them have joined in a foundation named 'Kinetisch Noord'. In one of the warehouses the foundation has develloped the kunststad but as it has become more comercial there have already been artists who left the NDSM. On top of that there are some big companies like HEMA and MTV that recently moved their heidquarters to the NDSM. If it was not for the economical crisis there might have been some large scale housing projects as well.

My ideas on the NDSM site. I see the NDSM as a very dynamic place. Its also clearly very fluctuative because of all the big events that are taking place at the site. Because of these properties its very important to think about the future of the site. The place will most likely change a lot further in the future. To be competitive with the big scale property developers we should present a plan that can react and give shape to the future changes.

My first idea is to have another breeding place. Maybe my first sketch of the bubbles is at the base of this idea. This idea might take shape as boats inside the dock. The boats can be taken by individuals and connected together as small clusters of boats to create spaces where all kind of people can work together.

Individuals might be able to shape their own boats. The boats can also move outside the dock for example to connect to other boats in other breeding places. Or if the users of the boat think they dont fit at the NDSM anymore they can just open the dock and sail away.
