Aim of concept

When you walk around NDSM, there isn’t much visible activity. By implementing activities that provide a dynamic use, the area will become more lively. In this way, people feel more welcome in the area. With dynamic use, I mean visible activity throughout the day (and even night). In this case a suitable user group would be students. Together with the need of more study places in Amsterdam the program of a study area is initiated. Different users will come and go on different hours of the day, which makes the use dynamic.

One of the problems in the area is the focused use of buildings. In this way, all other participants are excluded. This rigid way of using the area, doesn’t contribute to the energetic ecosystem of NDSM. Al the output stays in the sub-ecosystems inside the buildings/companies and initiatives don’t provide something to the ecosystem. This projects does not only attracts student, but it’s open character allows everyone to explore this object. This contributes to a open character and a dynamic ecosystem. This will be realized by merging public green facilities into the design. In this way, the exterior can be explored by every user. A small café will be implemented to provide some foods and drinks for the students and for everyone who is relaxing on the green terraces overlooking the IJ-river.

By creating this opportunity to use the object as a small park, furniture is created in the public space. Spontaneously use of the external building increases the opportunity to use the open space in different ways, not only as a transition zone.

Input from NDSM existing ecosystem

The characteristics of NDSM create a pleasant learning environment. The vast open space and the IJ-river create a calm atmosphere. Together with the right climate, light and facilities a pleasant learning environment can be created. The psychological distance from your normal life, created by the IJ-river and the ferry, will also set a useful environment where you won’t get distracted. Next to the environmental inputs from NDSM, the student can also share different facilities on the site, like a fablab, mediatheque, diverse workshops and a skatepark.

Output from project to ecosystem of NDSM

This concept can change the way people feel on the site. It aims to make them feel more comfortable. A lively and open atmosphere is created by integrating the green landscape and the dynamic use. It will bring new users to the site. In this way, the students can get to know NDSM better and they can get involved with other initiatives and events on the site. Next to this, a new facility will be brought to the site: a small café. The design will work as furniture in public space and is free to use by anyone who feels like it.

Connections to other projects

A mediatheque will be created as an intergraded design with the flooding project (14). Both user groups will be able to use this facility. The small café can be used by anyone on the site. Food & drinks can be enjoyed on the green terraces. User groups will overlap with the skate park project. Different facilities around the site, like the fablab, can be used by the students.
