In this part an extracted selection of problems and opportunities in the NDSM-ecosystem is listed. These problems and opportunities are elements that this project aims to respond to. Indicated problems and opportunities are based on the results of the NDSM Development Research and professionals we spoke to in the Kunststad.

Problems

No interaction/ connections between different people and buildings on NDSM. (Most of the people on NDSM use the area as a transition area for their way to Amsterdam city centre or Amsterdam-Noord. Up to now, most people do not know what is going on at NDSM. However people are interested in what’s happening in the Kunststad. And when having a look at a chat with Bjorn van Rheenen, he told us that he would realy like to see other people 'looking through his window'. So there is an idea that there are also other artists in the Kunststad who want to connect to outsiders.)

Lack of information about NDSM as a whole. (As already mentioned people do not know what is going on at NDSM, however they are interested. Another result of the survey was that people were also missing other sorts of information. They would like to have information about the routing on NDSM, what is going on there, public transport connections, NDSM history, etc.)

No covered area to wait for ferry. (As the particular location for the pavilion is already an area where people are waiting for the ferry, it seems very obvious to have a covered place where people are protected from the weather and wind. However such a thing is still missing when waiting for the ferry at NDSM.)

Opportunities

Making use of an existing activity. (In the case of intending to make a waiting area for the ferry, there will be used an already existing activity; waiting. The people used to wait in front of the ferry platform, where was nothing to do. Waiting on the ferry should be more exiting for people.)

People have to pass through the particular place. (Because of the location, the pavilion can use the routes of people, to make them pass through the pavilion.)

The location, in front of the ferry platform, is a connection node to different routes over NDSM. (Due to the location in front of the ferry, the pavilions place will be a node an intersection of different routes of people over the NDSM wharf.)

The location forms an entrance for NDSM, from Amsterdam city centre, as well. (On daily base thousands of people pass through NDSM as a connection to Amsterdam center or to the neighborhoods next to NDSM in Amsterdam-Noord. The boulevard at the south-banks of the wharfs therefor could be the place for making an worthy entrance for the whole area.)
