Challenge

Challenge is to combine the different layers on the site. Those layers can contain people, but also objects like old materials and new buildings. Make the area more commercial but still keeping the old shipyard feeling and the graffiti drawings. There are also layers of infrastructure like, the vissible, for example roads, and the invissible, for example pipelines under the ground, connection between people and communication systems.

Today the site is used as an area for small (creative) companies and some bigger offices like from the MTV, RedBull and HEMA. The site can be used as an industrial park. Now most of the people which are there come to work. The contrast is what will interest people. The old values of the site - the crane, art and shipyard elements like the slope – have to be conserved and pointed out. The new elements and buildings have to fit in, and add new value to the site.

Red carpet

The 'red carpet' project in St. Gallen, Swiss, by Carlos Martinez [[1]] and Pipolotti Rist [[2]] is an example of the connection made between buildings by creating an outside livingroom. The office district becomes this way one area in staid of devided buildings.

The NDSM wharf already kind of has this connection. The streetart and old constrcutions point out. The thing is they needs to be isolated.

quality site

- the NDSM area is isolated from but close to the centre

- one is free to do what he wants

- the history from the place

structure plan

The structure of the building should adapt to the surrounding and the people. It is an undefined object (like an alga) where people don't know what to do with. They are free to move, add or transform the object. They will eventually give the object it's function.
