The Project in short
What follows is a short explanation of the project so far. For a more detailed description go to Challenge.
The NDSM Ecosystems
The NDSM is an area that goes trough many stages in its development. After the shipyard had closed its gates the NDSM has already seen a variety of users come and, most of them, go. Over time those different users have claimed their parts at the NDSM. This resulted in a diverse group of users which has the potential to act together and have advantage like an ecosystem. Today however there is not so much of interaction between the different users which causes a lack of a feeling of attachment and a missed chance in cooperation. Meanwhile the vulnerable ecosystem is threatened by the big scale developers who are almost ready to take over the NDSM. In the comming 10 years the NDSM has to show that it is worth more than just a housing and offices site.
Problems and Opportunities
If you take a look at NDSM today from the outside, not much seems to be going on. Appearances are deceptive, inside the warehouses there is a lot of activity. The great walls of the hangars are not inviting to take a look. This might be one of the reasons why all of the users of the NDSM have so little of interaction.
- As illustrated before the companies and institutions of the NDSM stay in their own environments and have almost no interaction. This causes the people to feel unattached and not at home.
- Because each institution doesn’t look behind its walls a lot of opportunities are missed. As shown before different user-groups can strengthen each other in a good working ecosystem. If for example public and artists are brought together in certain place by means of exhibition space. It creates advantages for both parties. Same could be said about interaction between skatepark and redbull. MTV and redbull. Artists and inhabitants.
+On a professional level a good working ecosystem with a lot of interaction between different user groups would greatly improve productivity, knowledge and image of the site.
+If people would more interact and get to know more of their neighbors they will feel more at home and attached. This is an important aspect because right now the site is a hot and attractive but when this changes those who are only there for that reason and who do not feel attached will soon lose interest and go away.
+Feeling more attached and responsible for your neighborhood improves the community as a whole. Less violence, dirt, vandalism, etc. More friendly and happy people. :)
+As a result of the economical crisis there is a lack of investors. This creates great opportunities for creative ideas that can be developed buttom-up instead of top-down. At the NDSM an opportunity arises for those who want to have a temporal space at a booming site.
