'''TRANSITION 1'''
+

+
The NDSM wharf is a former shipyard located on the banks of the river IJ in Amsterdam Noord. Boasting grounds exceeding the size of ten football pitch combined, it represents the past success and achievements of Dutch shipping industry in the early of 20th century. In the 1970’s the ship building companies that dominated the harbor area of Amsterdam collapsed. In the 1980’s, the NDSM Wharf (the site of the project) bankrupted. The city of Amsterdam North applied for EU-subsidies in order to promote alternative industries and made in 1992 a contract with industrial companies for renting the NDSM hall. When parts of the hall started to become a breeding ground for criminal activities the city of Amsterdam North stopped the contract in 1998. At that point they had to face the problem of finding a new use for the wharf and keeping the threat away of ‘losing’ the wharf to the by-now professionally organized squatters network.
+

+
In 1999, a group of artists, theatre producers, skaters and architects banded together under the name Kinetisch Noord (Kinetic North) to present a plan to the council for the redevelopment of the former shipyard. A full strategy was developed by 2002 and the group is well on their way to elevating the NDSM Wharf to the position of the largest cultural breeding ground in the Netherlands. And from now on, this former shipyard transforms itself into an enormous subcultural Mecca. It offers facilities for a number of artistic disciplines and small crafts. The wharf has also become a sanctuary for individual artists and craftspeople as well as for independent organizations, both established and less known, to cooperate, inspire and create.

'''ARCHITECTURE and CRISIS'''
+

+
Before I go to NDSM, I search on the Internet and find some general information about the site. There is fun fact that intriguing a lot: two years before, a fire accident happened in the north part of the NDSM area.[http://prototag.hyperbody.nl/prototag.php?id=6ktxBMIHJ2SdTCvL79bFSA Go to protoTAG] Two old factory buildings were turned down and new buildings were planned to be built within the site because of this crisis.

+
Architecture and crisis are not incompatible. Destruction is an inescapable beginning of all construction. Extermination and reconstruction accelerate the urban development, upgrade the architecture and will never cease to act during our civilization progress.
+

+
The conventional buildings, once they are built, will stop to develop. While our civilization which includes science and technology level keeps growing in an non-linear way. Architecture can’t always keep in pace with the technological development. It means that what is refinement one moment will be barbarism the next.

To cope with this situation, renovation is the first concept that comes to my mind. In the initial sketch, an additional building is designed and attached to a structure in order to improve the condition of existing factory building.

'''INDUSTRIAL AESTHETICS'''
+

+
During the field trip, I saw some of the current situation of NDSM. The transition from industrial area to culture centre has already stimulated the renovation of the existing building. The approach of renovation mostly focuses on using the heritages of the shipyard to generate the industrial aesthetics. The icons and elements of industry are kept only as decorations and form the current landscape.

'''CORPSE'''
+

+
Inside of the building, there is a small yellow box intriguing me a lot. It used to be the controlling booth to operate all the cranes and coordinate the workflows within the factory. It is the brain of this huge mechanical body. But now, there is no access to the box and no program in the box. It becomes nothing but a decoration.[http://prototag.hyperbody.nl/prototag.php?id=QFKKcL4lWkQ5Sv3zJXWGaQ Go to protoTAG] The brain is dead. The building becomes a corpse of industrialization. The redevelopment did not make the corpse revived but only parasitized.

'''REPUBLIC''' is a non-standered architectural project for NDSM wharf area. Via the '''Commercialization''' and '''Industrialization''', the project intends to constantly provide diverse, innovative, adaptive and sustainable customized building products. Via the establishment of an open source platform, through the release of design authority to public and the invite of creative people into the design process, via the simulation of an entire market environment, through the interconnection and interaction among all the participants(users, designers, developers and operators) and objects(market, architecture), this project is trying to cope with the tension between efficiency and resilience for NDSM and exploring a nature balance between displine and freedom for urban developing strategy and architecture design approuch.

 +
To achieve the '''Commercialization''' and '''Industrialization''' of architecture, the intervention could be addressed in three levels:

'''ARCHITECTURE AND MACHINE'''
+
1.'''Virtual platform(the Archi-STORE)''' - Commercializing architecture through setting up the e-business market.

“Reference to the world of the machine is reference to the only significant contemporary reality.”
+
2.'''Physical platform(the Archi-FACTORY)''' -  Industrializing architecture through the emergent technology of automatic manufacture and robotic assembly.
The machine is second nature, connecting man to nature as an enhanced vernacular-giving form to man’s understanding of natural forces.
+

 +
3.'''Product(Customized units)''' - Based on these two platform, massive of diverse, innovative, adaptive and sustainable customized building products will be provided for NDSM.

 +
For the future users, extensive possibilities of customized service will be available. For the designers, their creativity could be realized and rewarded through Archi-STORE and Archi-FACTORY. And the most significant, a highly diverse and sustainable development of customized building product industry will be taking place in NDSM.

Architecture REPUBLIC

author(s):Chao Wang

Summary

REPUBLIC is a non-standered architectural project for NDSM wharf area. Via the Commercialization and Industrialization, the project intends to constantly provide diverse, innovative, adaptive and sustainable customized building products.

To achieve the Commercialization and Industrialization of architecture, the intervention could be addressed in three levels:

1.Virtual platform(the Archi-STORE) - Commercializing architecture through setting up the e-business market.

2.Physical platform(the Archi-FACTORY) - Industrializing architecture through the emergent technology of automatic manufacture and robotic assembly.

3.Product(Customized units) - Based on these two platform, massive of diverse, innovative, adaptive and sustainable customized building products will be provided for NDSM.

For the future users, extensive possibilities of customized service will be available. For the designers, their creativity could be realized and rewarded through Archi-STORE and Archi-FACTORY. And the most significant, a highly diverse and sustainable development of customized building product industry will be taking place in NDSM.
