Based on research at the NDSM location, three key functions are defined as very necessary at the location. These functions are: ''catering, conference space and exhibition space''. Also, there is an incredible need for ''interaction'' between different groups of people at NDSM. At the moment, there’s a lack of transparency, cohesion and connectivity at NDSM. This is a shame because the idea of the 'broedplaats' is not living up to its full potential. Solving this problem is the core of the design and will be solved by creating some sort of central meeting place, a place that everyone at NDSM can identify themselves with.
 +
The three functions are each put in separate ‘bodies’ and are visualized as a snake crawling through the landscape. The landscape and construction of the bodies is based on the spine and the ribs of the snake, giving the entire design cohesion and meaning. In the center of the bend defined by the snake, an interactive ‘network plaza’ is created: A large outdoor sitting hill, with its orientation towards the three bodies. This large hill is orientated towards the bodies, and due to the transparency of the bodies, the activities at NDSM become visible. Different activities happen in each body, and when activities become visible and relatable, interaction is stimulated. NDSM is taken out of its shell and shown to the world.

The NDSM wharf is a vibrant cultural place, used for festivals and expositions. It is located in Amsterdam North, alongside 't IJ. A ferry connects the wharf with Amsterdam Centraal station.

Ships used to be built at NDSM. Now the wharfs are abandoned and it is the city's ambition to create a creative hub on the remains of the wharfs.

Many creative companies such as MTV have already seen the possibilities at NDSM and have moved their headquarters there.

Artists are prominent residents of NDSM, mainly in the Kunststad where ateliers are located. The reason artists reside there is because it's dirt cheap and fairly close to the city. The fact that they can interact with other artists in the same hall is an added value.

=Concept=

The concept is to create an art center with a double function. One is to be an extension to the Kunststad, a publicly accessible art exhibition where artists can rent space to exhibit their art. It will be an open space, partly outside and will serve as a showcase for Kunststad artists.

The second function is a private art gallery, privately owned, where people can go to buy art, selected by the owner/manager.

The building needs to be an eyecatcher; its function is to attract people to NDSM and the building itself. TO support this, a green leisure space will be created where people can chill, have lunch and enjoy the only greenery on NDSM. The open space will be a meeting point for employees of MTV, Red Bull and Kunststad artists as it is the only outdoor place where one can properly enjoy the surroundings. Especially during festival season this space will thrive, when fesitval goers relax on the grass and soak up some culture and sun.

A special feature in the green space will be the art drops. It's called "Rent a Drop" and it is a cheap and quick way for an up and coming artist to show his work to a broad audience. The park is littered with little drops of about 1-2 cubic meter and one can hire one or more of these drops to exhibit his art in, as his own little private museum. The drops can be interactive and open and will be suitable to showcase a lot of different types of art.

=Location=

[[File:Project02_overview01.jpeg|850px]]

The chosen location is the open space between Kunststad and the old abandoned warehouse on its west side. There used to be warehouses on this very spot but they have been recently demolished and what remains is a deserted open space. This will be the perfect place for the art center.

A visual link will be created between the art center and the Kunststad, where the huge Kunststad western wall will be perforated to generate more sunlight on one hand and a visual connection on the other hand.

The area is huge - over 8000 m2. Functions will need to be added to this green space, possibly other projects can be placed here as well.

[[project02:Water|Water]] is key for NDSM. It is and it always has been. Water will also be a key feature in the project. The project will be inspired by water in shape, but also in its sustainability goals - water storage for example. A vision on water is important in this day and age because water is a key factor in so many problems around the world. Water scarcity in deserts, rising sea levels and increasing floods to name a few. More info can be found here.

NDSM Center

Summary

Based on research at the NDSM location, three key functions are defined as very necessary at the location. These functions are: catering, conference space and exhibition space. Also, there is an incredible need for interaction between different groups of people at NDSM.
