Site

The NDSM wharf is a vibrant cultural place, used for festivals and expositions. It is located in Amsterdam North, alongside 't IJ. A ferry connects the wharf with Amsterdam Centraal station. Ships used to be built at NDSM. Now the wharfs are abandoned and it is the city's ambition to create a creative hub on the remains of the wharfs.

Many creative companies such as MTV have already seen the possibilities at NDSM and have moved their headquarters there.

Concept

The idea is to form connections between the public, artists and art. A space will be created in which an artist can live, work and expose his work at the same time. A public route will guide the public along the artists' ateliers and outdoor exhibition spaces. They will see how the artist works and lives and will see his final works along with it to create the ultimate art viewing experience.

The concept is pretty malleable for now, the artist can live on the top floor and the route, ateliers and exhibition spaces can be on ground level, or it can be the other way around with the route being placed on the roof.

Connections are important in this concept. The artists will be linked together. Artists with similar interests can share ateliers and exhibition spaces.

So in short this is the focus of the project:

Inspiration

Water is key for NDSM. It is and it always has been. Water will also be a key feature in the project. The project will be inspired by water in shape, but also in its sustainability goals - water storage for example. A vision on water is important in this day and age because water is a key factor in so many problems around the world. Water scarcity in deserts, rising sea levels and increasing floods to name a few. More info can be found here.
