Mechanism

Project17 71.jpg Project17 51.png

There are several components (100 components). Each component consists of three panels which are stick together by a kind of hinge. I have to mention that only the second and third panel stick together by means of a hinge. The joining point between first and second one is fix. Each panel has 400 centimeter height and 500 length and 50 centimeter width. There are 10 rails under the ground which are base for moving those panels on top of that. The length of the rail is about 80 meters so they (components) will be able to moving horizontally and form in different position. Sometimes come as an individual component and in some occasion couple of them as a long wall. Apart from that each panel will be able to come up and moving vertically besides that horizontally moving. As I explained earlier each component has three module or three levels. Each panel can comes up in 50 centimeter steps until each level. When it comes to the next level it will be able to fold from its hinges. As a result it has capability to make a kind of shelter or semi open spaces.

Rules

Positioning

There are Festival, Exhibition, Semi-open Spaces for recording, and in some cases for concerts. Besides, it is a park in the rest of times which provide an interactive environment to visit historical part of the NDSM wharf and enjoy walking through the water.

Festival & Exhibition, panels should be set before the festival by director of the program in related to the demands. Some short walls to show the posters, number of steps in order to seat and rest and finally couple of shelters based on climate change for group meeting and something like that.

Park, there are some panels and shelter to make shadow or preserve against rain besides that some steps in order to seating and resting. Furthermore, those panels which connected with land and water simultaneously can come up as a response to the person who walking on top of that. Each step one goes further it comes up more and more to make thin island through the water to walking.

Studio, making semi-open spaces or in some cases totally close room with different capacity depends on that performance.

Interactivity

Manually

In some cases panels should be managed manually. However it would be interactive in two parts in response to the climate circumstances and human demands. The project has a plan to use two different sensors to recognize climate changes and walking. In order to rainy or sunny day make a shelter and other part of the project the panels in response to the human coming up.

Automatically

It has two automatic movement. First, in response to the climate change. The third panel according to the sun orientation and also in rainy day will make a shelter. The other one is moving vertically according to the weight of passenger who walks on top of the wall.

Problems

Architectural Quality

Programming

It was a most important and time consuming part of this project prototype. The current file has 100 components which each components has 3 boxes, it means that 300 panels. obviously we need to have control over each panel apart from each component. Besides, we need to have a system which helps to arrange components through the rails according to the demands. Now we can manage the position of each component by a true-false control panel in Grasshopper. So we just need to link this panel to our project to control it.

Furthermore, we have to have possibility to control over each component after standing to its location for vertical moving. By means of a slider each component can move up and down. Moreover, finally a slider help us to independently fold the third panel from 0 to 180 degree.

Detailing

Structure

As I mentioned before the location of project was a shipyard with about 4% slope. This slope has its structure as you can see in gray part of the model below. Because of the concept we needed to cut the slope in length and its structure orientations is in width. As a result I designed a extra structure perpendicular to the current structure to tolerate the load of project.

Panel We have three different modules of panel. The first one (fix) has a metal frame and covered by a slender panel. I have had an idea to use a kind of punched panel with sufficient durability against rain and uv. The holes on the panel not only can be designed to improve the architectural quality but also allow to wind circulation. Besides structure can take advantage from this concept.

The second type has a fix frame but thicker than the previous one with two engine on its beam to bend the panel. So this type of panel has two parts, fix frame and movable panel. The third type is a half of stairs with a cover panel only on one of its edge. two of these modules create a stairs cage After 180 degrees bending of this panel.

Prototyping

Sensors & Activators,

We need an actuator and two sensors.
